Israeli Attacks and Tension in the Region
As tensions rise in the region as a result of Israel’s attacks targeting Ismail Haniyeh, Turkey’s Ministry of National Defense (MSB) has reiterated its warnings about instability. The MSB has called on Israel for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. In a press briefing at the ministry, MSB Press and Public Relations Advisor Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk stated that the number of Palestinians who lost their lives in Israel’s attacks on Gaza has reached nearly 40,000, and that this situation has further increased tensions in the region.
Instability Risk and Humanitarian Situation
Aktürk stated that the majority of the survivors in Gaza were displaced and were struggling to survive without basic human needs. “Schools, hospitals and other civilian targets continue to be the targets of Israeli bombs. In addition, Israel’s directing its attacks towards Yemen and Lebanon is leading to the spread of conflicts in the region and increasing the risk of instability,” he added. In this context, Aktürk once again emphasized that Israel should act within the framework of international law and accept an immediate and unconditional ceasefire within the framework of the United Nations Security Council resolutions in line with the call of the international community.
Security Measures at the Borders
Regarding border security, Rear Admiral Aktürk emphasized that multi-faceted security is being provided at the borders with intensive, effective and dynamic measures. “A total of 310 people, 5 of whom were members of terrorist organizations, who were trying to cross the border illegally in the last week were caught, while 916 people were prevented from crossing the border. Thus, since January 1, the number of “people caught trying to cross our border illegally has reached 7,412, and the number of people prevented from crossing the border has reached 66,975,” he said.
