Statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry
The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that Acting Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri held an important meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari regarding the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Baqeri emphasized that Haniyeh was in Tehran at the invitation of Iran.
Baqeri noted that Israel’s attacks were not limited to Palestine alone, but had expanded to include Yemen, Lebanon and Iran. He said that this situation had crossed Iran’s “big red lines” after Israel targeted Haniyeh in Tehran.
In this context, Baqeri stated that this action could have two important consequences. One of these consequences is that Iran should definitely respond to this attack, and the other is that Israel is more likely to take further actions that will disrupt stability in the region. Baqeri also emphasized that in this case, Islamic countries should not remain silent.
Proposal for an Extraordinary Meeting
Baqeri suggested to Pakistani Foreign Minister Dar to hold an extraordinary meeting among Islamic countries, stating that this meeting would be an opportunity for Islamabad to use its capacity to prevent further Israeli attacks.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Dar expressed his condolences over the tragedy of Haniyeh and welcomed Iran’s offer for an extraordinary meeting. Narrowly stressed the importance of sensitizing Muslim communities to the crimes of the Zionist regime.
He also described the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran as “a clear violation of international law and Iran’s sovereignty”, which he noted as a development that increased tensions in the region.
