Huw Edwards, a prominent TV anchor previously associated with the BBC, has been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, as confirmed by London’s Metropolitan Police on Monday.
Edwards, aged 62, was a familiar face as the presenter of the BBC’s flagship 10 o’clock evening newscast. He spearheaded the broadcaster’s coverage of significant national events, such as the passing and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the coronation of King Charles III last year. His tenure at the BBC concluded in April 2024.
According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, Edwards is set to appear at Westminster magistrates’ court on Wednesday to face charges of sharing illegal images on WhatsApp. The charges stem from alleged incidents between December 2020 and April 2022.
Edwards, residing in Southwark, London, was taken into custody on November 8, 2023, and subsequently charged on June 26, following approval from the Crown Prosecution Service.
The statement read, “He was charged on Wednesday, 26 June following authorization from the Crown Prosecution Service.”
Upon initiation of criminal proceedings, media outlets in the UK are subject to reporting restrictions to prevent influencing potential jurors with external information. The police issued a cautionary note regarding these limitations.
“Media and the public are strongly reminded that this is an active case. Nothing should be published, including on social media, which could prejudice future court proceedings.”
Born in Bridgend, Wales in 1961, Huw Edwards dedicated four decades to his career at the BBC, culminating as one of the highest-paid personalities with an annual salary ranging between £475,000 and £479,999, exceeding $600,000, as reported in the broadcaster’s latest annual statement.
