Heavy Rains Paralyze Life in Mumbai
According to the India Today newspaper, Mumbai, the capital of the state of Maharashtra with a population of 21.3 million, has received record rainfall in the last 6 hours. Due to the heavy rainfall in the city, suburbs and low-lying areas have flooded. While main roads were submerged, traffic flow was severely disrupted.
The seriousness of the situation was evident in the regions where manholes overflowed, vehicles were swept away and citizens had difficulty moving due to the rains. Train services were cancelled in Mumbai, 27 flights were diverted to different airports and 50 flights could not operate. The Maharashtra state government announced that all schools in Mumbai city and Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts were closed.
Since June, 58 people have lost their lives due to floods in the northwestern states of Assam and Manipur. Monsoon rains, which are effective between June and September every year, cause serious damage and losses throughout India.
