The scorching heat wave affecting the United States continues. According to the Washington Post, citing state officials, at least 27 people have lost their lives in the country in the past week due to extreme heat. 14 of these deaths occurred in the state of California, where temperature records were broken. It was reported that 8 of the people who died were over the age of 65 and most of them were in their homes. While 10 deaths were reported in the state of Oregon, it was stated that half of the deceased were elderly and the others were young. There were 2 deaths in the state of Maryland and 1 in Arizona.
Increase in Heat-Related Deaths
According to official data in the United States, heat-related deaths have been steadily increasing in recent years. While approximately 1,600 people died due to extreme heat in 2021, approximately 1,700 in 2022, this number exceeded 2,300 in 2023.
