A Historic Moment for Iceland: Halla Tómasdóttir Takes Office

Seven-year-old Halla Tómasdóttir found herself bewildered on her mother’s birthday in 1975. Unlike any other year, the kitchen was devoid of her mother and aunts, who typically prepared the family’s festive meal. Instead, they were directing their husbands and brothers, urging them to take on the household duties. This unusual scene was part of a larger movement, as women across Iceland were taking a stand on that day to demonstrate their invaluable contributions to society during the nation’s first national women’s strike.

Fast forward over four decades, and Ms. Tómasdóttir is now the newly elected president of Iceland, a journey influenced by the powerful message she absorbed on that pivotal day. “They told me they wanted to show the world that they matter,” she reflected earlier this week. “I think that was the day I decided I might like to matter.”

As a prominent feminist finance expert, Ms. Tómasdóttir garnered notable support from various figures, including international music icon Björk, who campaigned on her behalf. She officially assumed the presidency on Thursday, taking over from Guðni Jóhannesson, who completed two consecutive four-year terms.

Iceland, a picturesque Nordic island nation home to approximately 380,000 residents, functions as a constitutional republic with a unique parliamentary system. The role of the president, while largely ceremonial and not bound to a political party, serves as the head of state. The actual governance power lies with the prime minister, who is usually the leader able to command a majority in Parliament.

Despite the ceremonial nature of her position, Ms. Tómasdóttir is determined to make a meaningful impact during her presidency. “My goal is not to be a president with all the answers,” she stated with conviction. “I want to be a president that asks the right questions.”
