While the global trend is moving towards a four-day workweek, Greece has taken a different path by implementing a law allowing some companies to enforce a six-day workweek. This shift aims to address the country’s aging workforce, support financially struggling workers, and uphold the traditional Greek way of life.

The law is applicable to private sector employees in specific industrial and manufacturing sectors, as well as those working in businesses operating continuous 24/7 shifts, with certain exceptions. It can only be implemented in “exceptional circumstances,” such as sudden increases in workload.

Labor unions, advocating for improved working conditions and rights, have expressed opposition to this move. The extension of the workweek in Greece, which already has the longest average workweek in the European Union, raises questions about its potential impact on productivity.

This decision by Greece contrasts with global initiatives, such as Senator Bernie Sanders’ proposal to reduce the standard workweek in the United States to 32 hours from 40. Other countries like Britain, Iceland, and New Zealand have conducted trials on alternative work models in response to the changing work landscape due to the pandemic.
