The AHRC report, “Detailing Government Anti-Racism Programs and Policies”, examined the efforts of national, state, territory and local governments in Australia to combat racism. The report highlighted that the government had not been effective enough in combating racism in the last five years and had failed to detect racism.
The findings reveal that the government is inadequate in combating racism in the country. Giridharan Sivaraman, an AHRC official, made a statement about the report results, stating that the government’s approach to combating racism is not good enough and that some units are hesitant to use the term “racism”.
According to Sivaraman, the government needs to develop a clear and strategic approach to be more effective in combating racism. In addition, the report made six recommendations to the government regarding combating racism and called for “the establishment of a council to combat racism.”
6 Recommendations from the AHRC
- Developing a nationally accepted definition of racism
- Providing anti-racist education in schools
- Developing a clear and strategic approach to combating racism
- Establishing a council to make recommendations to the government on combating racism
