Gov. Tim Walz: A Progressive Voice in Minnesota

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has emerged as a notable figure advocating for progressive tax policies in his home state, gaining the backing of influential union leaders. His recent selection by Kamala Harris as her running mate has propelled him into the national spotlight, drawing attention to his political stances.

Unlike other contenders for the vice-presidential position, such as Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Walz has not faced extensive scrutiny—until now. Here’s a detailed look at where he stands on crucial business issues:

Taxes:

Under Walz’s leadership, Minnesota has embraced a “moderately progressive tax system,” as noted by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. As governor, Walz has championed tax reforms aimed at benefiting middle- and lower-income residents of Minnesota. His administration has implemented measures such as:

  • Tax rebates for families and individuals
  • A child tax credit designed to alleviate financial burdens on parents

These initiatives have been financed by increasing taxes in other areas, including a 1 percent surtax on capital gains, dividends, and various investment incomes exceeding $1 million annually, as well as elevated taxes on the overseas earnings of multinational corporations. This suggests that Walz is likely to support Democratic efforts aimed at enhancing taxes on the affluent to eliminate loopholes within the estate tax, although Harris’s specific views on this matter remain unclear.

Labor:

Walz has secured endorsements from key labor union officials, most notably Shawn Fain of the United Automobile Workers and Sara Nelson of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. His supporters highlight significant legislation he enacted last year, which includes:

  • State-funded paid family and medical leave, allowing workers to take up to 12 weeks per year to care for a newborn or a sick family member, or up to 20 weeks in total for both personal and family health needs.
  • A ban on most noncompete agreements that restrict workers’ employment opportunities.
  • A prohibition on employers mandating attendance at anti-union meetings.
  • Enhanced protections for workers in sectors such as warehousing and nursing homes.

However, it’s worth noting that Walz vetoed a bill aimed at establishing minimum wage standards for Uber and Lyft drivers, responding to concerns from Uber about potential job losses and service reductions in the state.
