Germany’s first African-born member of Parliament, Karamba Diaby, announced this week that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming general elections. The 62-year-old Senegal native, who was first elected in 2013, cited a desire to make way for a new generation of politicians as the main reason for his decision. While downplaying racism as the main factor behind his departure, Mr. Diaby has been a target of increasing abuse, including hate mail and death threats.

Mr. Diaby, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats party, has been a vocal critic of the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which has gained significant traction in his constituency. The rise of AfD has coincided with a surge in threats and violence directed towards Mr. Diaby, including incidents such as bullets being fired through the window of his office and an arson attack.

Despite initially stating that racism was not the primary reason for his decision to step down, Mr. Diaby has highlighted the dangerous impact of extremist narratives on society. In a recent interview, he emphasized the need to address the hatred spread by AfD, which he believes poses a threat to social cohesion.

Mr. Diaby’s election over a decade ago was hailed as a milestone for equality, as he became the first African-born member of the German Parliament. With a background in chemistry and having immigrated to East Germany in 1985, his presence in politics was seen as a significant step towards diversity and representation.

Representing the city of Halle in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Mr. Diaby has faced significant challenges in a region where nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiments are prevalent. Despite receiving substantial support from voters in Halle, he has decided to step down due to the escalating threats and violence he has endured.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Diaby has remained steadfast in his commitment to his constituents and his values. While acknowledging the support he received from the community, he has expressed concern over the impact of divisive rhetoric on democratic principles and social harmony.
