Mr. Diaby, a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats party, has been a vocal critic of the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which has gained significant traction in his constituency. The rise of AfD has coincided with a surge in threats and violence directed towards Mr. Diaby, including incidents such as bullets being fired through the window of his office and an arson attack.
Despite initially stating that racism was not the primary reason for his decision to step down, Mr. Diaby has highlighted the dangerous impact of extremist narratives on society. In a recent interview, he emphasized the need to address the hatred spread by AfD, which he believes poses a threat to social cohesion.
Mr. Diaby’s election over a decade ago was hailed as a milestone for equality, as he became the first African-born member of the German Parliament. With a background in chemistry and having immigrated to East Germany in 1985, his presence in politics was seen as a significant step towards diversity and representation.
Representing the city of Halle in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Mr. Diaby has faced significant challenges in a region where nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiments are prevalent. Despite receiving substantial support from voters in Halle, he has decided to step down due to the escalating threats and violence he has endured.
