The NATO base in Trabzon’s Boztepe district, used by American soldiers, and the NATO base in the Ortaköy neighborhood of the Maçka district, known to have been built in the 1980s against the Russian threat, will be turned into a tourism center. The base, which served as an ammunition depot for a while, was completely evacuated in 2010.

Within the scope of the special project prepared by Maçka Municipality, work has been initiated to transform the old NATO base, which has military dormitories, a football field, training areas and 8 soundproof hangars, into a new destination in tourism. AK Party Deputy Chairman and Trabzon Deputy Mustafa Şen, Yılmaz Büyükaydın, Vehbi Koç, AK Party Provincial Chairman Sezgin Mumcu and Maçka Mayor Koray Koçhan visited and inspected the base.

During the inspections made at the NATO base, whose hangars were built in a way that they cannot be seen from the outside, Trabzon Deputies and Mayor Koçhan stated that the project was ready and that work was being accelerated to open the base to tourism. Mayor Koçhan said, “We have rolled up our sleeves to open the NATO base to tourism as soon as possible.”
