Flood Disaster in Afghanistan

Afganistan'da Sel Felaketi

According to the latest statements by the Afghan government’s Ministry of State for Natural Disasters, serious floods have occurred in the country’s capital Kabul, as well as in the provinces of Logar, Laghman, Ghazni, Nangerhar, Maidan Wardak and Panjshir.

It was reported that more than 100 houses in the provinces were partially or completely destroyed, and at least 10 people lost their lives and 8 people were injured as a result of these disasters. This situation occurs due to the combination of factors such as the melting of heavy snowfall in Afghanistan during the winter months, the effects of heavy rains and the inadequacy of infrastructure.

Causes of Flood Disaster:

  • Melting of Snow Falling in Winter:The sudden melting of snow accumulated during the winter raises groundwater levels and increases the risk of flooding.
  • Heavy Rainfall:Heavy rainfall in the spring months causes soils to become saturated and cause floods.
  • Inadequate infrastructure:Infrastructure deficiencies in the country cause water to flow uncontrollably and cause great damage.

Afghanistan faces similar floods every year, resulting in hundreds of deaths. This shows that the country’s preparedness for natural disasters needs to be increased.
