Western diplomats are urgently working to prevent an escalation of conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border following a tragic incident. A rocket launched from Lebanon struck a soccer field in an Israeli-controlled town, claiming the lives of at least 12 children and teenagers.

This attack marked the deadliest assault on Israeli-controlled territory since the recent exchanges of missile and rocket fire between Israel and Hezbollah. In response, Israel conducted retaliatory strikes across Lebanon, signaling a tense situation that could potentially lead to a full-scale war.

A spokesperson for the National Security Council attributed the attack to Hezbollah, although the group denied involvement. U.S. officials have urged Lebanon to advise Hezbollah to exercise restraint in the face of potential further Israeli responses.

Despite the heightened tensions, Israeli officials have expressed openness to a diplomatic resolution. They have highlighted the possibility of averting a full-scale war through the implementation of a long-standing but unenforced U.N. resolution from 2006, aimed at establishing a demilitarized zone in southern Lebanon.
