Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Toros, a faculty member at the Meteorology Engineering Department of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), stated that throughout history, the end of July and the beginning of August were recorded as hot months on calendars, and these dates were known as eyyam-ı bahur. Stating that these dates were recorded as “July 31-August 7” in some calendars and “August 1-8” in others, Toros said that “eyyam-ı bahur” meant the hottest days.

Temperatures Are Rising

Toros, who stated that these dates have now started to change, said, “We broke a global temperature record on July 21st this year. We are in a period where records are being broken. In June, Turkey’s temperatures were 3-6 degrees warmer than the long-term average. We are experiencing the hottest days we used to experience in the past at the end of July and the beginning of August, and we are experiencing them all the time these days have been very long. “Africa’s scorching temperatures have moved northwards, including Turkey, under the influence of the high pressure areas that have formed over Africa.”

Warnings and Recommendations

  • In July, the daily high temperatures exceed 30 degrees. In this sense, we are experiencing the spring season.
  • Similar forecasts indicate that the hot weather will continue in the coming days.
  • Temperatures may be around 34-35 degrees, and with humidity, the perceived temperature may reach 40 degrees, as in previous days.
  • One must be careful against forest fires and not light fires in forests.
  • For those who are outdoors, it is important to wear light-colored clothing, a hat, and sunscreen.

Istanbul Aydin University faculty member and meteorologist Dr. Guven Özdemir reminds that the eyyam-i bahur was a humid heat wave. Stating that this name should not be called a disaster-sized temperature, Ozdemir stated that temperatures increased by 2-3 degrees as of the end of July.

Precautions and Things to Consider

  • It is recommended not to go out between 10:00 and 17:00.
  • Light-colored clothing should be preferred, and a hat and sunscreen should be used.
  • Houses should be naturally ventilated and air conditioning use should be limited.
  • One must be careful against forest fires and not light fires in forests.

Conclusions and Predictions

There is a risk of high temperatures, especially for the elderly, chronically ill, pregnant women and children. It is possible to overcome heat waves in a healthy way by paying attention to the precautions mentioned during this period. Weather experts warn that similar temperatures will continue in the coming days.
