Exploring Art and Nature in Pienza
In the heart of Tuscany lies the picturesque Val d’Orcia, a region known for its captivating landscapes and historical charm. Within this enchanting setting, the town of Pienza stands as a testament to Renaissance architecture, designed by the renowned Bernardo Rossellino. Its elegant white travertine marble structures are surrounded by palazzi that add to its timeless allure.
This summer, a new and exciting path has been unveiled in Pienza, offering visitors a unique experience that seamlessly blends art and nature. The “Path of Art and Soul,” or Il Sentiero dell’Arte e dell’Anima, leads travelers from the town’s main piazza into the serene countryside, spanning a distance of just under two miles.
Along this scenic route, 28 stunning benches crafted from travertine marble await discovery. These benches, designed by accomplished artists, serve as both functional resting spots and exquisite works of art. Each bench showcases the artist’s creativity and skill, with designs ranging from regal thrones to whimsical shapes evoking the beauty of nature.
Artistic Treasures Along the Path
- Girolamo Ciulla’s Creation: One of the unique benches features Girolamo Ciulla’s artistic touch, offering visitors a blend of comfort and aesthetic pleasure.
- Kan Yasuda’s Bean-Shaped Bench: Kan Yasuda’s creation takes the form of a bean, inviting travelers to take a moment of repose amidst the stunning Italian countryside.
The Path of Art and Soul is adorned with contributions from esteemed Italian artists like Giò Pomodoro, Sandro Chia, and Mauro Berrettini, as well as international talents including Matthew Spender, Justin Peyser, and Jean-Paul Philippe. These exquisite benches are a gift from Fondazione FUR, founded by Swiss art collector Urs Rechsteiner, who was inspired by a bench created by artist Riccardo Grazzi in his Villa Santa Maria garden.
Urs Rechsteiner envisioned a series of benches by artists from around the world, guiding visitors through the landscape to reflect and find solace in the beauty of art and nature. Each bench along the path tells a unique story, inviting travelers to pause, contemplate, and immerse themselves in the artistic treasures of Pienza.
