Speaking at a conference held at the House of the Americas in Madrid, Spain, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that the EU could not unite on the issue of Israel. Borrell said, “The EU cannot unite on this issue because of a single country. My biggest regret is not being able to prevent Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza.”

Borrell stressed that the reason why so many innocent people lost their lives in Gaza after the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas was because the EU could not come together on a ceasefire and a political solution. He stated that Netanyahu had been called upon for months to abandon his actions, but unity had not been achieved.

Explaining the consequences of the EU’s failure to be a single voice against Israel, Borrell said, “The EU has no influence without unity. Our division in the Gaza conflict has prevented the EU from playing an effective role in the international arena.” Borrell likened the situation in Gaza to Ukraine, and stated that the EU remains geopolitically weak in a divided state.
