President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stirred controversy by suggesting that Turkey could intervene in support of the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel, escalating tensions between the two nations.

Erdogan's Strong Words

During a speech in Rize, Turkey, Erdogan stated, “We should be very strong, so that Israel cannot do this stuff to Palestine. Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we can do similar to them.” He emphasized the need for strength to take decisive actions.

Background and Current Situation

Erdogan’s support for Hamas, the Palestinian group in Gaza, has been evident throughout the conflict. He has compared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler and criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza. Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel have deteriorated, with Turkey halting trade with Israel in May.

Despite Erdogan’s rhetoric, Turkey has not militarily engaged in the Gaza conflict. However, Turkey’s support for the Palestinians and condemnation of Israel’s actions are widely shared in Turkish society. Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, accused Erdogan of following in Saddam Hussein’s footsteps, prompting strong responses from Turkish officials.

Official Statements

Erdogan’s communication director, Fahrettin Altun, emphasized Turkey’s commitment to peace and stability in the region but did not specify any plans against Israel. Altun warned against testing Turkey’s limits, promising a swift response to any provocation.
