Emilie Gomis: Olympic Ambassador Dismissed
Former French women’s basketball player of Senegalese origin Emilie Gomis spoke about the pressure faced by those who criticize Israel and support Palestine in France. Gomis shared a post on her Instagram account on October 9, 2023, detailing the process of being removed from her position as “Olympic Ambassador”.
Gomis shared an image of the French map covered with the Israeli flag, asking his followers, “What would you do in this situation?” and stated that his aim was to raise awareness about colonialism. However, he stated that he received warnings from his representative after this post that he should remain neutral and not share posts about the war.
While describing his experience, Gomis drew attention to the pressure that individuals who criticize Israel and support Palestine in France are subjected to. He also stated that he was blocked from social media platforms and his official accounts were closed.
IOC Decisions and Double Standards
Emilie Gomis criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for imposing sanctions on Russia while not taking any steps against Israel, describing this situation as double standards. Gomis stated that Israel should participate in the Olympic Games with a neutral flag and that a state that committed genocide should not participate in the Olympics with its flag and anthem.
Pressure and Support in France
Emphasizing the oppression faced by individuals who hold anti-Israeli views in France, Gomis said that the government and politicians are pro-Israel. However, Gomis said that the public generally supports Palestine and that this support is not sufficiently reflected in the media.
Sharing the difficult process he went through, Gomis emphasized that people need to understand the situation in Palestine and stated that athletes should also defend just causes.
