Gathering Outside Zone 7 Detention Center

In a poignant display of desperation and hope, hundreds of individuals recently converged outside the notorious detention facility known as “Zone 7” in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Clutching plastic bags filled with carefully prepared meals for their incarcerated loved ones, they huddled around lists of prisoners, searching for names and seeking any glimmer of information.

Many attendees shared strikingly similar narratives about the arbitrary arrests of sons, daughters, and siblings. These individuals were apprehended in various everyday scenarios—riding motorbikes, walking home from work, visiting a bakery, or stopping by a relative’s house—shortly after the country’s controversial presidential election.

The accounts painted a grim picture of the Venezuelan government’s approach, characterized by both sweeping and targeted arrests. Disturbingly, none of the families had been informed of the specific criminal charges facing their relatives, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and anguish.

The backdrop to this turmoil is a fierce campaign orchestrated by the Venezuelan government against anyone who dares to contest the results of the recent vote. This has resulted in a wave of repression that human rights organizations assert is unprecedented in Venezuela’s recent history.

“I have been documenting human rights violations in Venezuela for many years and have seen patterns of repression before,” remarked Carolina Jiménez Sandoval, the president of the Washington Office on Latin America, an advocacy and research organization. “I don’t think I have ever witnessed this level of ferocity.”

President Nicolás Maduro, who has been accused of autocratic governance, declared victory in the presidential election held on July 28. However, the administration has yet to release any official vote counts to substantiate this announcement. In stark contrast, the opposition has disseminated their own tallies, indicating that their candidate achieved a significant landslide victory.
