Incident Details
The incident took place on 2118th Street in Uğur Mumcu Neighborhood. During the demolition work that has been going on for about 3 months on the street, the walls of the 6-story Eda Apartment next to the collapsed building collapsed during the morning hours with a construction machine. Following the incident, the 6-story building was evacuated and the demolition work was stopped. While the teams that arrived at the scene began their work to assess the damage, there was tension between the residents of the building and the employees of the company that carried out the demolition.
Witness Statements
- Dilsah Guzel:“While the demolition work was ongoing, I left home in the morning and after a while I was shocked by the news that ‘your house has been demolished’. In an environment where our lives were in danger, all four flats in the building were demolished. Our belongings were left, I saw our house unrecognizable. We have nowhere to go, we are worried.”
- Ahmet Ilbasan:“During breakfast, we panicked at home due to a loud noise. We saved our baby at the last minute. After the incident, we had to leave the house in great fear. We will defend our rights.”
- Ozan Guzel:“During the demolition, the back part of the building collapsed and the walls collapsed due to the sudden explosion of the columns. The building is currently in a dangerous condition, we do not know how to continue. We are worried about whether our losses will “be covered and whether we will be able to continue living.”
Points to be considered
Although there was no loss of life in the incident, the residents of the building were forced to leave their homes and suffered material damage. The incident needs to be investigated in detail and the damages need to be compensated. It is also important to take the necessary precautions to carry out the demolition work more carefully and safely.
