Following the tumultuous events of January 6, 2021, when rioters breached the Capitol, a narrative battle has emerged between the Democratic and Republican parties regarding the essence of democracy. The Democrats have positioned themselves as staunch defenders of democracy, accusing former President Donald J. Trump and his supporters of extremist tactics to retain power against the will of the voters. In response, the Republicans have launched a counteroffensive.

President Biden’s decision to forego seeking re-election and the subsequent swift support for Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement have become pivotal points in this ongoing narrative clash. Republicans have taken to various platforms to argue that by pressuring Biden to step aside, Democrats have effectively “disenfranchised” the 14 million people who voted for him in the party primaries.

It is important to note that this accusation does not stem from any established party rule or legal violation but rather serves as the latest attempt by Republicans to sow confusion on a matter that significantly influenced key races in the past. Since the controversial aftermath of the 2020 election, particularly the events of January 6 and subsequent legal actions against Trump, Democrats have consistently portrayed Republicans as a threat to democratic principles.

Utilizing images from the Capitol riot in their attack ads, Democrats have mobilized their voter base against Republican-supported legislation aimed at restricting voting rights. This strategy proved particularly effective for Democratic governors and secretaries of state in crucial swing states, contributing to their victories in statewide elections in 2022, with Nevada and Georgia being the exceptions.

In a strategic move on Monday, Trump altered his approach to combat this narrative, focusing on the claim that the nomination was “stolen” from Biden. Trump’s social media post declared, “They stole the race from Biden after he won it in the primaries — A First!” He went on to label these actions as the “real THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!”
