Cancer, which is rapidly spreading in the world and in our country, also shows an increasing trend at younger ages. According to 2022 data, the three most common types of cancer in men are lung, prostate and colorectal cancer, while breast, lung and colorectal cancer stand out in women.
Stomach Cancer On The Rise
According to Memorial Ataşehir Hospital Medical Oncology Department Associate Professor Dr. Özlem Ercelep, the risk of cancer increases as we age. However, in recent years, the incidence of various organ cancers has increased in adults under the age of 50. Stating that colon and rectum cancers are common types at an early age, Ercelep emphasizes that colorectal cancer cases are increasing at a young age. In addition, an increase in the incidence of stomach cancer and esophageal cancer is also observed in young people. One of the reasons for this situation is the increase in obesity among young people.
Death Rates Did Not Rise
Stating that the risk of breast cancer at a young age is higher in Turkey than in Western societies, Gayrettepe Florence Nightingale Hospital Medical Oncology Department Prof. Dr. Çetin Ordu states that the increase in cancer cases is due to factors such as changes in eating habits and increased alcohol and cigarette use. Ordu also states that cancer death rates have not increased and attributes this to developing treatment and diagnostic methods.
