The Brazilian Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s decision to expand its illegal settlements in the West Bank, saying it was a clear violation of international law and jeopardized efforts for a two-state solution.
The statement emphasized that the Brazilian government viewed with dismay the settlement expansion decision taken by Israel on June 27. It stated that the decision cast a shadow on peace efforts and that these steps by Israel endangered regional peace efforts.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s commitment to a two-state solution was underlined, and the statement included, “We support the establishment of an independent Palestinian State within the 1967 borders, side by side with Israel, in peace and security, with East Jerusalem as its capital, encompassing the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.”
