According to a statement on Facebook by the Algeria-based non-governmental organization Search and Rescue Association, the bodies of 14 people, 12 of whom were Syrian nationals, who went missing in the desert on the Libyan border have been found. The bodies were found in the Belkubur area and belong to people between the ages of 10 and 57.
The Syrian Embassy confirmed that 12 of the bodies taken to the morgue in the Burç Ömer Idris region of Ilizi province were Syrian. However, there has been no official statement from the Algerian authorities on the subject.
It has been reported that temperatures in the desert regions of central and southern Algeria have reached 50 degrees in recent weeks. Algeria’s southern provinces are an important route for migrants illegally crossing from Africa to Europe.
