X, a member of the Belgian Green Party and a member of the federal parliament, drew attention to the violent incidents and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank in a video shared on his social media account. Stating that more than 38,000 people have lost their lives in the last 9 months, X emphasized that civilians in the Gaza Strip are at risk of starvation.
De Sutter stated that Israel was acting against international law in the West Bank and had carried out the largest land seizure since 1993. De Sutter stated that the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands must end and that instead of a peaceful solution, constant conflict was at the forefront.
De Sutter, who stated that the Green Party submitted a motion to the federal parliament to recognize Palestine, said, “Let’s recognize the state of Palestine now. We are making this call as the Belgian Greens.” De Sutter, who emphasized that Belgium is working on the process of recognizing Palestine and that this step is important, stated that Palestinians should be provided with freedom and equal rights.
Following Development Cooperation Minister Caroline Gennez’s announcement of efforts to recognize the state of Palestine in November 2023, Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib stated that a consensus had been reached among regional governments in the country, but that the official “recognition” announcement would be made at an appropriate time.
