Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Petra De Sutter made statements on her Twitter account regarding the second term of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. De Sutter reminds von der Leyen of her promise of humanitarian aid and support to the Palestinian people and reiterated her call for sanctions against Israel. De Sutter said, “Despite the international call for a ceasefire, many Palestinians were killed. A ceasefire now.”
De Sutter frequently voices support for Palestine and announced that the Green Party has submitted a motion to the Federal Parliament calling for Palestine to be recognised.
Von der Leyen Re-elected for Second Term
Ursula von der Leyen, the candidate of the EPP, the largest group in the European Parliament, was re-elected President of the European Commission with the approval of EU leaders as a result of the elections held on June 6-9. Von der Leyen won a vote of confidence in the sealed-ballot voting in the General Assembly with 401 “yes”, 284 “no” and 15 abstentions. Thus, she gained the right to continue her post as President of the European Commission, which she has held since 2019, for another 5 years.
