Resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh and Aftermath
In Bangladesh, after student protests, the government came under increasing pressure, forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and leave the country. Following these developments, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus. Hasina’s flight from the country led to the opening of a murder investigation after a person was killed by police during the unrest.
Investigations have also been launched against six senior officials of Hasina’s government, amid weeks of protests in the capital Dhaka, further tense political atmosphere in the country.
- Lawyer Mamun Mia, who filed the case on behalf of a citizen, said the court in Dhaka had directed the police to accept the “murder case filed against the accused”.
At least 400 people lost their lives
During the unrest, which took place during Hasina’s premiership, at least 400 people were killed, including prosecutors, some of whom were shot by police. Businessman Amir Hamza filed a murder case in July after Abu Saeed, a grocer, was shot in the head while crossing the road. Hamza told a magistrate’s court that students were holding a peaceful protest on July 19 and that police opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd.
