In a statement made through Hezbollah’s official Telegram account, the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran caused great sorrow. The statement expressed condolences to all Palestinians for the martyrdom of Hamas leader Haniyeh and emphasized that the resistance struggle will continue with determination.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian. According to the statement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Haniyeh was assassinated in an attack on his residence. Iran and the Hamas Movement hold Israel responsible for the assassination, while Israeli authorities have not made any statement on the matter.
Haniyeh was elected as the Head of Hamas’ Political Bureau by the Hamas Shura Council on May 6, 2017, replacing Khaled Meshaal.
