Alarming Statement from Amnesty International
Amnesty International Germany expressed its concerns about the police intervention against individuals who participated in the Palestine solidarity demonstration held in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin on 17 August 2023, in a statement on its social media account at X. The organization stated that the video footage and news reports published about the events seriously concerned them.
In the statement, “Independent and transparent investigations into police officers are essential in such cases.”In addition, various videos and images shared on social media clearly showed that the police used harsh measures against the prosecutors during the demonstration on August 17.
Footage of a young man being taken into custody being thrown to the ground and severely beaten with fists while the police intervened drew attention. Another post recorded the moments when a police officer strangled a female protester lying on the ground and used violence on her. Such incidents cause great outrage in society and pose a serious threat to rights and freedoms.
