A dissident group has emerged victorious in the recent election for control of the Amazon Labor Union, marking a significant development for Amazon warehouse workers. The union, which won a representation vote at a Staten Island warehouse in 2022, has been embroiled in a contract negotiation dispute with Amazon since then.

The dissident group, known as the A.L.U. Democratic Reform Caucus, overcame internal divisions and challenges to secure leadership positions within the union. Connor Spence, a prominent figure in the group, will succeed the founding president, Christian Smalls, who opted not to seek re-election.

In a closely contested election with approximately 250 votes cast, Mr. Spence defeated the union’s current recording secretary. This outcome signals a significant shift in leadership at the union, with Mr. Spence set to lead the charge in negotiations with Amazon.

The dissident group had previously filed a lawsuit to push for leadership elections within the union, citing concerns about transparency and accountability. A settlement reached in January paved the way for the recent election, which was monitored by a court-appointed observer.

In addition to the presidency, the A.L.U. Democratic Reform Caucus also claimed victory in securing the union’s three other officer positions. The group expressed relief at being able to focus on engaging Amazon in negotiations after a prolonged period of internal reform efforts.
