The recent events that took place in Konak district of Izmir have deeply shaken our society. In two separate tragic cases, women became victims of male violence and lost their lives.
Event Details
- Event 1: In the incident that took place in Duatepe District, a person named SM, who was in the process of divorce, stabbed his wife Gülsüm M to death. While the murder suspect escaped, unfortunately Gülsüm M. died in the hospital to which she was taken.
- Event 2: In another incident, a person named RK killed his estranged wife, Fatma K, by shooting her in the head with a gun. The escaped suspect has still not been caught and is being sought by police teams.
Statement from the Mayor of Konak
Konak Mayor Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu, in her statement on her social media account, stated that femicides have reached dire proportions and said: “We are living in days when we wake up from one pain to the next. With the devastating news we have received in “The last week, we have seen again the dark situation of femicide. This time in our district.” Our sisters Gülsüm and Fatma in Konak lost their lives due to male violence, and by their closest relatives, whom they called ‘husbands’. We also remember the pain and anger of our sisters who were taken away from life in the prime of their lives. We say ‘Enough is enough’ to prevent femicide. We shout, ‘We keep the contract alive’.”
