Turkey’s Military Air Power Development

Türkiye'nin Askeri Hava Gücü Gelişimi

Turkey is taking important steps to increase its military defense and operational capacity. In this context, action was taken on July 12, 2022 for the 5th generation fighter jet project. Turkey took part as the seventh international partner in the F-35 project, which will be developed jointly with the United States. In addition, the National Combat Aircraft (KAAN) project was planned as the local leg of this new goal.

Turkey’s goals include adding European Union-made Eurofighter aircraft to its inventory along with the procurement of F-16V fighter jets. However, German authorities were experiencing some problems in the procurement of Eurofighter fighter jets. Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler made important assessments on Habertürk television regarding this issue.

“I think we’re nearing the end.”

When asked about the procurement of Eurofighter aircraft, Güler responded by saying, “I think we are approaching the end.” Expressing that three of the Eurofighter partner countries are providing support to Turkey, Güler said, “We are also hearing about positive developments in Germany, we hope it will be finalized soon.”

“F-16V procurement process is progressing positively”

Responding to a question about the F-16 procurement process, Güler said, “The talks with our American friends regarding the F-16s have always been positive. They are understanding, but we have not yet reached the end and signed. We want to “buy 40 F-16 Viper Block 70s. We also request the ammunition that will come with them. Our American friends are currently examining these positively and responding in a timely manner.”
