Walsall Council has described the chemical spill into a canal as a “major incident” and said a multi-pronged response was being made. The Environment Agency is carrying out work to detect sodium cyanide and other chemicals in the water following the incident.

In the statement, it was emphasized that sodium cyanide dissolves in water. Therefore, it was emphasized that the public should stay away from the canal and the surrounding areas. In addition, warnings were made that direct physical contact with the water carries serious potential risks to health.

In the relevant statement, it was also stated that those who fish from the canal should definitely not eat these fish.

“We Understand the Public’s Concerns”

Walsall Council Leader Garry Perry confirmed the incident, saying the chemical spill was “sodium cyanide”, which can cause seizures, vomiting and loss of consciousness. “We understand (the public’s) concern. Of course we want to do everything we can to take the necessary precautions to protect individuals,” he said.

According to the Environment Agency, exposure to this chemical can cause health problems such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, changes in heart rate and loss of consciousness. Therefore, citizens in the affected area who are exposed to canal water and feel unwell are advised to seek medical advice by calling 111 or 999 in an emergency.
