Turkey’s Ethiopia-Somalia Diplomacy: Second Round of Talks Completed

Turkey’s Diplomacy Line: Ethiopia-Somalia Process

Turkey’s ‘shuttle diplomacy’ in relations between Ethiopia and Somalia continues successfully. With the positive atmosphere that emerged in the two important meetings held in Ankara, it is observed that diplomatic traffic has accelerated. Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan announced the completion of the second round of Ethiopia-Somalia negotiations mediated by Turkey and made the following statements:

“A significant rapprochement has been achieved between the parties”

Minister Fidan stated that the second stage of the negotiations that started in Ankara on July 1st ended today. He stated that these talks were much more comprehensive and in-depth compared to the first round. Fidan stated that they discussed some specific solutions during this process and said:

“These formulas aim to resolve existing differences and ensure that we agree on a framework that is acceptable to both parties. We have had the opportunity to address a greater number of issues in greater depth compared to the first round. This is a very welcome development .”

“Notable progress has been made”

Fidan emphasized that significant convergence had been achieved between the parties on some basic principles and specific elements, and said, “Notable progress has been made in this regard.”

“Our goal is to alleviate concerns across the region”

Fidan stated that as Turkey, they are making efforts to eliminate current concerns and solve problems for the benefit of not only Somalia and Ethiopia but also the entire region, and expressed their belief that a cooperative and constructive solution can be reached.

Minister Fidan gave a date for the third round

Fidan stated that they aim to reach a sustainable and applicable outcome with the continuous participation of the parties and their continued commitment to the success of the Ankara Process, and that the third round of negotiations will be held in Ankara on September 17. He said that Consultations with the parties and regional partners will continue during this process.

“Türkiye undertook this task under the leadership of President Erdoğan”

Stating that Turkey undertook this critical task under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Fidan expressed that they expected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to continue their constructive approach and determination for the success of the Ankara Process.
