Bread Drying Tradition in Gaza
In the northern part of Gaza City, we witness the local people’s struggle to survive using traditional methods. Two Palestinians, Ibrahim al-Shubaki and Subhi al-Mazloum, prefer to dry their bread in the sun as part of their daily life. This ancient and valuable method not only prevents food waste, but also provides nutrition for animals.
Drying Process
- The breads are first laid out outside to dry under sunlight.
- The dried bread is then carefully broken into pieces and turned into nutritious food for animals.
- This method both ensures efficient use of natural resources and offers an economical solution.
Animal Nutrition
Dried pieces of bread are offered to animals in the barns. In this way, the animals’ nutritional needs are met and food waste is reduced. Ibrahim and Subhi emphasize that this practice is important for both the environment and animal health.
In the harsh conditions of Gaza, such traditional practices stand out as a testament to the community’s resilience and cultural heritage.
