Colombia Bans Coal Exports to Israel

Kolombiya'dan İsrail'e Kömür İhracatına Yasak

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on the X social media platform that a decree banning coal exports to Israel will come into force. This decision is considered a reaction to Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Petro drew the attention of the international community to this tragic situation by using a harsh expression in his post, “They are making bombs with Colombian coal to kill Palestinian children.” It was observed that the decree was signed by President Petro, as well as Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and the Ministers of Finance, Mines and Trade.

It was stated that the ban will come into effect within five days after its publication in the Official Gazette, and it was emphasized that approximately 5 percent of Colombia’s total coal production is exported to Israel, and the largest buyer is the United States.

Petro had previously stated in a statement on June 8, “We will suspend coal exports to Israel until the genocide is stopped.” In this context, Colombia had announced on May 3 that it was officially severing diplomatic relations with Israel, citing the attacks on the Palestinian people in Gaza.
