Tim Walz, the current governor of Minnesota, has an intriguing background that sets him apart in the realm of American politics. On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines by selecting Mr. Walz as her running mate, a choice that underscores a significant departure from the perception that the Democratic Party is dominated by cultural and coastal elites. His life story and approach contrast sharply not only with Ms. Harris, who hails from California, but also with former President Donald J. Trump, a billionaire from New York, and to some extent with Mr. Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, a Yale Law School graduate and author of a best-selling memoir.
