Police Mobilization Amid Fears of Far-Right Protests in Britain
On Wednesday, thousands of police officers were deployed throughout Britain in response to concerns that protests organized by far-right groups could escalate into further violence. This comes on the heels of several days of unrest, which has shocked communities across the nation due to anti-immigrant riots.
In the past week, numerous towns and cities in Britain witnessed violent confrontations, largely fueled by far-right agitators and a disinformation campaign that aimed to incite chaos following a tragic knife attack during a children’s event in northwestern England. Rioters engaged in clashes with law enforcement, set vehicles ablaze, and targeted mosques and hotels that were housing asylum seekers.
Far-right organizations have issued calls for additional protests on Wednesday night, with reports from the BBC indicating that police were keeping a watchful eye on at least 30 locations. Authorities in areas such as Kent, Liverpool, and Rotherham, which had experienced previous violence, were on high alert. Joe Mulholland, the director of research for Hope Not Hate, a British advocacy organization that investigates extremist groups, noted, “The widespread circulation of this list has understandably caused significant distress, anxiety, and fear. This list was specifically compiled to instigate such emotions within Muslim and immigrant communities.”
A recent snap poll conducted by YouGov revealed that following the week of unrest, nearly half of Britons now perceive right-wing extremists as a significant threat—an alarming increase of 15 percentage points in just six months. However, among those who voted for Reform UK, the populist anti-immigration party led by Nigel Farage in last month’s election, only 18 percent viewed right-wing extremists as a major threat.
While the majority of respondents condemned the riots, a notable 21 percent of Reform UK voters expressed support for the violent actions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a stern warning on Tuesday evening, stating that anyone involved in the violence would face “the full force of the law.” He highlighted that over 400 arrests had already been made, with around 100 individuals charged.
