TBMM Digital Media Commission Meeting
TBMM Digital Media Commission Chairman and AK Party Hatay Deputy Hüseyin Yayman made the following statement: “The TBMM Digital Media Commission will meet this week or at the beginning of the week as soon as possible with the ‘Instagram’ agenda or the ‘digital’ agenda .” Emphasizing that due to the nature of the negotiations, all parties need to take a step back, Yayman said the following:
- “The statements that Instagram ‘opened today’ or ‘will open at this time’ increase the expectation even more. This situation causes the parties to enter a different psychology. If Instagram is going to open soon, why is it not complying with the demands of the Republic of Turkey? A negotiation process is currently underway. This ‘digital diplomacy’ should be handled in a more result-oriented manner and away from screens. I believe that if Instagram and Meta comply with the laws in Turkey, this problem will be resolved. “be solved much more quickly.”
Reminding that they had previously listened to Meta officials twice at the Turkish Grand National Assembly Digital Media Commission and expressed their demands for opening a representative office in Turkey, Yayman stated that Meta had responded positively to these demands and given convincing and sincere answers to the MPs’ questions.
Meta Authorities Can Be Invited
Yayman stated that they have demands regarding double standards in the upcoming process and continued as follows:
- “Digital platforms are areas where everyone can freely express themselves. However, it is absolutely wrong to approach these areas differently with ideological, religious or other value-laden concepts. We should focus on issues such as violence against women, sexual crimes and virtual gambling , especially on platforms like Meta. We are discussing the Ismail Haniye issue, but in fact there are other issues that lie much deeper than the problems such as sexual content sharing, the fight against addiction, the proliferation of drugs and bullying among adolescents. are not talked about enough around the world. Our fundamental approach is to stand against censorship and bans as a government; the Republic of Turkey is a state of law. We expect all digital network providers to act in accordance with the laws of Turkey. do not want double standards. While on the one hand, terrorist organizations’ sharing is encouraged, on the other hand, LGBT sharing and gender neutralization are encouraged, it is absolutely unfair that figures such as Ismail Haniye, who are important in our terms. social values are censored. “We think that negotiation processes should work in accordance with their rules.”
Regarding the call for a meeting to be held with the TBMM Digital Media Commission, Yayman made the following statements:
- “As the head of the commission, I am in constant communication with our MPs. The TBMM Digital Media Commission will meet this week or at the beginning of the week as soon as possible regarding Instagram and the digital agenda. Our commission is the commission that holds the most meetings after the Constitutional Commission, Justice Commission and Planning and Budget Commission. We listened to TikTok four times. We believe that the most important condition for digital negotiations is such meetings. “Have listened to Meta officials before. If our commission members and MPs want Meta officials to be invited again, we will do that too. There is no such request at the moment.”
