Academics operating in the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (IKBY) evaluated the problems created by the terrorist organization PKK in the region and the Iraqi central government’s decision to ban the activities of so-called political parties affiliated with this organization to Anadolu Agency (AA).

He is a lecturer at Newroz University in Duhok, Iraq. Abdurrahman Sengali“The PKK has been conducting military operations and receiving logistical support on the borders of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq for over 40 years. It has been carrying out attacks on various parts of Turkey and the Kurdistan Region and is making plans for new attacks,” he said Şengali emphasized that this situation is unacceptable and illegal within the framework of international law, and said, “This poses a serious threat to the security of the KRG and Iraq.”

Şengali continued his words as follows: “Since 1991, the PKK’s activities have been concentrated mostly within the borders of the Kurdistan Region. These attacks must now be stopped. The PKK has destroyed the economic structure of the region, caused hundreds of villages to be evacuated, and therefore the people have become unable to continue their agricultural activities. The PKK has established affiliated organizations under different names in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. It is not possible to accept a structure that opposes the established state, no matter. Which country it is in. Because this structure poses a threat to the security of that state. This is what is currently happening in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. They have established affiliated structures under different names and are completely implementing their policies. in Shengal (Sinjar) also stem from this. The structures there are preventing the daily life, reconstruction, and revival of Shengal.”

Şengali, who drew attention to the fact that the existence of PKK structures under various names poses a serious risk to the country’s security, expressed his satisfaction with the ban on the activities of so-called parties affiliated with the PKK. He said, “This decision taken in Iraq will prevent these structures from participating in the political process. The ban will contribute to an improved political process.” He stated that the PKK has not provided any benefit to the Kurdistan Region and the Kurds in the past 32 years, on the contrary, it has become a constant threat. He made the following assessment: “The PKK has organized terrorist acts against party leaders, burned down bazaars and prevented the people of the region from earning a living.”

A lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences, Duhok University Sami RekaniHe commented, “Iraq has decided that groups directed and supported from outside the country cannot conduct military or political activities and that this is forbidden.” Rekani stated that economic cooperation projects between Turkey and Iraq in areas such as water resources have strengthened security agreements, and emphasized that Iraq should take certain steps to reduce issues that pose a threat to Turkey within the framework of the agreements reached.

Rekani concluded his words as follows: “With these steps, Iraq has blocked the way for these structures to carry out military and political activities. Turkey’s Claw-Lock operation is also a part of the agreement reached between Turkey and Iraq. At the same time , pressure is being created on the PKK/YPG’s presence in Syria. This process is ongoing, but the US continues to support the PKK/YPG.”
