Home to more than 150 species of birds on the Dicle University campus, the Kabakli Irrigation Pond is also of great importance as a breeding and feeding area for local and migratory birds. Located within the campus, this pond acts as a shelter with less predator pressure than other lakes and ponds in the surrounding area and provides a safe habitat for birds in the region.

‘The protection of Kabakli Pond is of great importance’

Stating that many small streams, rivers and lakes in the region have dried up due to global warming, Dicle University Faculty of Science Biology Department Head Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kılıç said, “Kabaklı Pond serves as an oasis for local and migratory birds living here. Located within the Dicle Basin, this pond is preferred by many species with the water resources, coastal facilities and sheltering conditions it offers. This situation causes us to call this place a bird paradise. There are many species such as mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and insects in the area. In other regions, species are in danger of extinction due to predator pressure. , heat and drought. Therefore, the protection of Kabakli Pond is of great importance.”

‘There is relatively little hunter pressure and it is a protected area’

Emphasizing that the protection of Kabaklı Pond is possible with the support of public institutions and the contribution of sensitive citizens, Prof. Dr. Kılıç said, “We can see many different duck species in this area. Herons are very important among water birds. Night herons, great egrets, little egrets and cattle egrets are constantly here as regulars. Apart from this, there are representatives of many shorebirds.” species living in our country here. These species prefer this place, especially with their young ones, because they can feed comfortably. This protected area, where predator pressure is relatively low, has become a place preferred by our birds. and plovers, which we frequently encounter especially on the shores, are among the permanent members of this region. In addition, our region has a great wealth of small songbirds.”

“We expect support from our citizens on this issue”

Prof. Dr. Kılıç said, “In the studies conducted, especially the nature shots and photographs taken by Selim Bey are very valuable. They reveal the existence of these species. Our duty is to develop protection opportunities and, if possible, to supplement water here. As long As we protect the area, our biodiversity will continue. Otherwise, we will face the risk of losing this area like other species. If protection measures are followed, water is not polluted and human pressure on the environment is reduced, these species, our biodiversity. , will be able to continue to live here for many years. Therefore, as a university, cooperating with the municipality and the province to protect this area is an important step for us to continue our biodiversity. We also expect support from our citizens in this. regard. Their interest will contribute to the survival of these species. We can overcome this task by working together. Applying reason and science should be the most effective way to solve problems.” and concluded his words.
