GLAAD’s Lavish Spending Patterns Under Scrutiny
The New York Times conducted an in-depth investigation into the financial practices of GLAAD, one of the leading nonprofit organizations advocating for L.G.B.T.Q. rights. By reviewing an extensive array of expense reports and receipts from January 2022 to June 2023, alongside employment agreements, tax filings, audit reports, and other relevant financial documents, the Times uncovered a troubling trend of extravagant spending within the organization.
While high salaries and luxurious perks are often associated with the for-profit sector, legal experts express concern over such practices in a nonprofit context. GLAAD, which employs approximately 60 individuals, is exempt from federal and state taxes, a privilege that comes with the responsibility to ensure that executive compensation is deemed reasonable and aligned with the organization’s mission, as well as the intentions of its donors.
According to the Times’ findings, the lavish expenditures, primarily attributed to GLAAD’s chief executive, Sarah Kate Ellis, may have not only breached the organization’s internal policies but could also be at odds with Internal Revenue Service regulations.

- First-Class Travel and Luxury Accommodations: Ms. Ellis submitted requests for reimbursement covering over 30 first-class flights within an 18-month period. The organization frequently covered extravagant car services for her, including a two-day expenditure in Washington D.C. that totaled $3,900.
- Attendance at Prestigious Events: GLAAD incurred expenses exceeding $60,000 for airfare and hotel accommodations for Ms. Ellis and a colleague during their visit to the renowned Cannes Lions advertising festival on the picturesque French Riviera last year.
- World Economic Forum Participation: During the 2023 World Economic Forum in Davos, Ms. Ellis and her team stayed at the opulent Tivoli Lodge, a seven-bedroom chalet that cost nearly half a million dollars for the week. This extravagant trip also included a day of skiing, further inflating the costs for the organization.
With an annual budget approximating $30 million, the choices made by GLAAD’s leadership regarding spending raise significant ethical questions about the organization’s adherence to its mission and the proper management of donor funds.
