Karabağlar Plateau, a hidden natural wonder in the Menteşe district of Muğla, offers a different plateau experience. Located approximately 25-30 meters below the city center, the plateau offers a cool and green atmosphere to its visitors, making it a preferred destination during the summer months.
According to Ortaköy Neighborhood Headman Hüseyin Uçar, there are approximately 4,500 households on the plateau. While the majority of these households are used in the summer months, between 800 and 1,000 households spend the winter on the Karabağlar Plateau in the winter months.
Uçar said, “Karabağlar Plateau has a unique feature in Turkey. When plateaus are mentioned, places that go up usually come to mind, but Karabağlar Plateau in Muğla is in a position where you go down. This plateau attracts attention with its natural beauties and nature.”
Stating that people living in the Karabağlar Plateau have developed historical solutions against climate change, Uçar said, “They have solved the water crisis in agricultural areas by collecting water from the mountains in wells. The protection of this water management system is of great importance. “The natural beauties of the plateau must be passed on to future generations.”
Another striking feature of the plateau is the coffeehouses located here. Muhtar Uçar said, “There are approximately 18-19 coffeehouses in Karabağlar Plateau. Some of them have been restored and continue to provide service. These coffeehouses used to be meeting points for people. The plateau is 5-6 degrees cooler than the center of Muğla and has an atmosphere that relieves the summer heat.”
