OCHA: Horrific Attacks on Civilians in Sudan
According to a written statement from OCHA, a hospital, residential areas and a livestock market were targeted in attacks that took place in Fashir, the capital of North Darfur state, on July 27. It was reported that many people were killed and injured in the attacks
Condemnation from the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan
The statement also included the views of Clementine Nkweta-Salami, UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Sudan and Sudan Humanitarian Coordinator. Salami emphasized that these attacks were horrific for civilians and that civilian areas such as hospitals and markets should not be targeted. It was stated that the UN strongly condemned these indiscriminate attacks in Sudan.
Humanitarian Aid and the Threat of Famine
Salami noted that efforts to maintain economic activity, access humanitarian assistance without hindrance, and increase humanitarian financing are critical to Sudan’s ability to avoid the imminent threat of famine. Noting that Sudan is facing the worst level of acute food insecurity in its history, Salami shared that more than 18,000 people have died since the beginning of the conflict between the NGO and the army in April 2023.
