According to information received from diplomatic sources, the head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Hakan Fidan met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Vienna. During the meeting, bilateral relations, economic issues and cooperation in the field of energy were discussed. Additionally, views were exchanged on the war in Ukraine, developments in Gaza, the situation in Syria and other regional issues. Minister Fidan is also scheduled to meet with the Foreign Ministers of Malaysia, Laos, Singapore, the UK and the ASEAN Secretary General.
Türkiye-ASEAN Relations
According to information obtained from diplomatic sources, Turkey took the first step towards establishing institutional relations by becoming a party to the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, one of the fundamental documents of ASEAN, in 2010. In 2017, it became ASEAN’s “sectoral dialogue partner” .”
Cooperation with ASEAN within the scope of the sectoral dialogue partnership is progressing with projects implemented by Turkey, ASEAN members and the secretariat on the basis of the “Practical Cooperation Areas” document, which is a roadmap for relations. When the sectoral dialogue partnership was established in 2017, Turkey’s trade volume with ASEAN countries had increased to 12 billion dollars.
The trade volume between Turkey and ASEAN reached 14.8 billion dollars in 2022 and 14.6 billion dollars in 2023.
