Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) Commissioner Adamu Abdullahi said that after three years of detailed investigations into Meta, the company repeatedly violated the country’s data protection and consumer rights laws through its Facebook and WhatsApp services.
Abdullahi stressed that as a result of the investigations, Meta did not offer Nigerian users the same data sharing options offered to users in other countries, and that this situation was against the law.
The Nigerian government has decided to impose a $220 million fine on Meta for these violations. Meta has 154 million active subscribers in Nigeria, as the country is the most popular.
