The Defense Security Cooperation Agency, a division of the US Department of Defense, announced the approval of a $2.8 billion military sales package to Saudi Arabia. This package includes elements of “system logistics and sustainment support.” The agency stated that the necessary certification has been forwarded to Congress.
The statement emphasized that Saudi Arabia is an ally that creates political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region, and that this sale will increase Saudi Arabia’s security and thus support the foreign policy and national security goals of the United States.
It was stated that the proposed sale would increase Saudi Arabia’s deterrence ability against current and future threats, and that the equipment and support approved for sale would not change the military balance in the region.
The Biden administration decided in February 2021 to impose restrictions on military equipment and weapons sales to Saudi Arabia as part of policies aimed at reducing violence in Yemen.
