Delegate Support for Kamala Harris
Delegates to the Democratic National Convention are in favor of swiftly nominating Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate, rather than engaging in a prolonged and potentially divisive debate. The New York Times conducted interviews with over 250 delegates nationwide, revealing that party loyalists view Vice President Harris as the strongest candidate to challenge former President Donald J. Trump.
“Kamala Harris puts us in a much better position to be able to compete, up and down the line, and makes this a much more winnable race,” stated John Hendrick, a delegate from Leon County, Florida.
A majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August supported President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential contest, as reported in interviews with The New York Times.
Running Mate Selection
As Kamala Harris focuses on choosing a running mate, there is no clear consensus among party insiders regarding her selection. According to the interviews, 16% of respondents favored Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, while 11% preferred Mark Kelly, the senator from Arizona. Approximately 28% of respondents either did not have a preference for the running mate or did not respond to the question.
