The US Department of Justice recently revealed that employees of the nonprofit agency Southwest Key sexually abused children in its care between 2015 and 2023. Southwest Key is based in Austin, Texas, and provides shelter to unaccompanied migrant children arriving from the southern border.
The statement said Southwest Key failed to take the necessary precautions to prevent sexual abuse and prevented children from reporting abuse, and a lawsuit was filed against the institution. Southwest Key, which currently operates under the US Department of Health and Human Services, has a total of 29 shelters.
