President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, stated that the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) should refrain from taking steps that could distance the island from a peaceful environment. Tatar emphasized that the Greek Cypriot Administration is moving towards turning the south of the island into a military operations center as a result of the agreements it has made with Israel and some other countries.
Rising Tensions in the Middle East
Tatar drew attention to the increasing military activity of the Greek Cypriot Administration after the launch of Israel’s attacks on Gaza on October 7, 2023, and reminding that the island has been a region where peace has prevailed for 50 years. Noting that the decisions taken by the Greek Cypriot administration have made the island a target for conflicts in the Middle East, Tatar stated that this situation threatens the stability of Cyprus.
Preserving Peace is Important
Emphasizing that the peaceful environment that has existed since 1974 must be preserved, Tatar underlined that the TRNC will not use the island’s territory to disrupt peace. Tatar called on the Greek Cypriot Administration to avoid policies that could endanger the island’s future, saying, “Unnecessary risks that would endanger Cyprus must be avoided.”
